Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) BLUE for Betty

I have jumped on board with Betty over at

Betty has a group of ladies that make wonderful quilts for charity. They meet monthly but as I am in a different state I join in on their 1/2 hour zoom on the 1st Saturday of the month. In the past we have done a specified block and posted it to Betty. This year is a bit different. We are to make a row of any design we like but it must be made in one colour. All shades or scraps. Your own choice to measure 56” wide and up to 10.5” high. We were told the 6 colours to make. 1 per month in what ever order we choose.

As I also follow Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) I will be making mine in their colour choice. January’s colour is BLUE. That’s easy to do. Out comes the blue tub.

Blocks are made.

Then joined into a row.

This has been posted and I’m off to find some more designs while I wait to see what February’s colour will be.

The POTATO CHIP block

Everyone is asking  “What is a potato Chip Block”.

Well I first saw it on Brenda’s YouTube when I was searching ideas for scraps.

She remembers a chip commercial that says “good luck eating just one” . 

So now she says “good luck just making one”.

As the title says, this is the basic design and colour layout. Lights and darks. Whether it be in a colourway or totally scrappy. 

I have chosen totally scrappy. Each piece is 2.5” * 4*5”.  It goes together like courthouse steps.

Here is my block done. It measures 12.5”. You can keep adding as many  rounds as you like. Some people have made full baby quilts and even larger by just continuing the rounds.

When I cut my blocks I store them in this box from Bunnings. The drawers are the perfect size.

A great way to use up all your scraps  and leftover bindings without thinking too hard. An easy one to do for leaders and Enders. You don’t even have to match seams.

What is a Potato Chip Block

While this pattern goes back at least 100 years and has been published under different names, it continues to be a popular favorite. The current name is only a couple years old. The idea being that this quilt is so simple and quick to assemble, you can’t make just one. Hence, its name the Potato Chip Block!.

Potato Chips and another placemat

I have joined a swap for potato chips. These measure 2.5” * 4.5”.

I had to cut out 200. Lucky I have a die for the go cutter. This made it quick.

So with the scraps I made another placemat.

That’s now # 45 out of 50

A few swaps I have been in

I have been getting into the Potato Chip blocks and been cutting up my scraps. I have used my GO cutter to cut all these. They measure 2.5” * 4.5”. I have a few hundred cut now.

 I joined up with Aussie Chippettes and put my name down for some swaps. These included 20 Potato Chip, 10 Terry Rowland, 10 * 4 patches and 3 house blocks.

Cute houses. I used my GO cutter to do the flying geese roof tops. They were oversized and I could trim them down to the perfect size. I always have trouble with flying geese measuring straight.

All ready to be posted out

I have returned from a 5 week holiday to Darwin and collected my mail. What a lovely surprise.

Look at all this happy mail. So many nice and pretty blocks.

Part 6 of Mystery Chaos - cutting… Part 7 - the block layout

 This week was an easy one. Cut, cut and cut.

Out came my green tub. 

Easier to tip them out on the floor.

I sorted out pieces that I could cut 4.5” squares & 4.5” * 8.5” rectangles.

All parts laid out ready for the block layout.

Part 7. The block layout.

Sewing the block together. Next week there will be a video showing different settings of putting the blocks together. There are 16 blocks measuring 20”. This will make a queen size quilt.

With the smaller pieces I used my go cutter to cut 2.5” * 4.5” to use in the border and the leftovers to be used as a start for my potato chip blocks.

The left over strips and crumbs have been packed away. Brenda has a string quilt sew along coming up in April so hopefully some of the greens will be used.
