Chookshed Challenge this month is COMPLETED

I did it.

My February challenge is done. It took a while but I got there.

Oh I’ve twisted one of the handles. I’ll unpick and resew it later…

I pulled out my greens to get this made and I am really happy with it.

Have you noticed all the zips and pulls I have used.

There are 3 pockets in the centre. This has room for me to put all the patterns instructions so they are kept with the rulers.

I have machined the first side of the binding and started hand stitching to finish it. There is so much fabric and makes the edge very stiff.

Slow stitching the bindings down. The binding done this way also helps give the bag strength and stability.

Here it is all finished. The back of the bag.

The front of the bag with rulers in the pockets.

I inserted a cake board in the centre pocket to give it strength so the bag wouldn’t sag. The rulers are fragile and this will help protect them.

You can have a look at the rulers her.

With this months finish I can link up with

My Chookshed challenge progress

Okay, this has been on my Chookshed challenge list for far too long. 3rd time lucky. I did a Flip La K workshop and bought a few rulers. I wanted to keep the separated from my ordinary rulers as the have instruction booklets with them. So I decided I wanted to make a bag. Out came the fabric I used at the workshop. Batiks and hand dies and greens.

Next I had to decide on a layout for the 5 different rulers and the special embroidered topper my friend made. (the one I lost, found, lost and found again).
I had already made a few of the flying geese blocks. I wanted to incorporate a made block so I could easily see what the rulers made.

Here are the other 4 blocks

It is pretty intense working out all the measurements and how to assemble with clear pockets and zips. But here is the start of one side

And with the clear pockets on

Here is the site that shows the rulers

So I am basing it on the T shape design bag that has 7 pockets. I am using the T shape but not adding the outside pockets. I am adding different size clear pockets on the outside front and back.

I need a bit of a rest after all that so the rest is yet to come soon.
As it being done in green I’m linking up with

Chookshed challenge no. 8 is my Flip la K bag

Deana has chosen no.8 for us to work on this month. Well this is the 3rd year I have had this on my list.

https://dreamworthyquilts.blogspot.com/2026/01/february-chookshed-challenge-number.html

My project to work on is my Flip La K bag.

A bag to put my rulers and patterns all in one place. I have kept putting it off.

I currently just keep them in a binder book. They really aren’t safe like this as they are very delicate. I have my green batiks and some hand dyes that I started to use in a workshop but my machine didn’t want to play ball. It kept skipping stitches. No matter what I did that weekend it wouldn’t improve. That’s probably why it has sat for so long. Time to change that.

February is also GREEN month over at So scrappy for the RSC challenge.

Maybe I can cover both at once.

***** EDITED ***** May CHOOKSHED challenge is # 8…. FlipLa K ruler bag

Ok. So my challenge item this month is # 8… To make a bag for my Flip La K rulers. It was on last year’s list but never got done. I just went to get my fabrics out and the embroidered sign wasn’t in there. That’s 2 I have lost now. A friend did the signs for me. Mmmmmm

****** EDITED ******

Another friend had my embroidered sign mixed up with her sewing. AND it’s GREEN too.

You can read on my Previous 2024 post to learn more about it.

And it’s green month at RSC. Maybe this project will be green.

Flip La K is done

I have put the sashings on.

And now for the borders. Occasionally I do pin my work.

Here it is with its borders.
It measures 69” * 82”

I think it came out great.

It’s now off to get quilted by another member.

CHOOKSHED stitchers challenge March no… is 4

Deana has drawn no. 4 for us to work on this month.

Mine is to make a bag for my Flip La K rulers. They are very delicate and I have noticed that this one has already broken so I will need to get out the super glue.

This is the reason a sturdy bag is needed.

These are the ones I own now. When you buy the ruler you need to email for the pattern. Then print it and keep it safe.

Our group did a workshop to be shown how to use the rulers. It is similar to foundation pieced but with no papers.

The Flip La K quilt is looking good and ready for sashings.

Another day of sewing had me working on Flip La K.

Sewing borders on to twist the blocks. This design covers up the different size blocks.

All borders have been put on the blocks and they are now trimmed ready for sashings. I will have to rearrange and twist some blocks to mix them up a bit first.

My daughter got this beach trolley when she bought her camper van. She didn’t want it. So lucky me.
It is now mine. The girls at sewing use them to load their sewing around on our sit n sews and retreats. Makes short work of a few loads.

More progress has been made on Flip La K.

I have sat done and worked out the fabric we were given.

Resewn blocks, trimmed other blocks to size, cut lots of fabric. Patched some to fit and now have a great plan.

All blocks are trimmed to the same size.

The new borders are going on. These will make the blocks look off size so it will hide some errors.

All the squaring up pieces have been cut

While I was watching YouTube Sal’s, tutorials and just talk shows.

Sashings have been cut, borders and bindings worked out. Now to get back to them at some point.

Back to Flip La K blocks

Some time last year our quilt group did a Flip La K workshop and our learning block was a challenge.

Lots to take in but necessary to understand the process of using the rulers.

Our first block fabrics was supplied by the tutor, Brenda. With the intention of the blocks being made into a charity quilt. Yes, I took on the challenge to put them together.

Well they were all shapes and sizes even though it was to finish a square.

I have unpicked some blocks and will iron and resew them.

I have an idea of how to make a design where they will fit together. Some blocks also ended up in reverse.
