Progress on my Farmers Wife quilt.

 Challenge #9 progress

After having it packed away for so long it took me quite a while to work out what size the pieces were and where I was up to. All sorted now though.

I have cut out the sashings and cornerstones and now am sewing the rows together.

And it is sewn together. I have reached the top right corner. 2 more rows and I will have the bottom left corner done. Then my rows will get smaller.

So I did achieve my goal this month.

Thanks Deana

CHOOKSHED challenge July is # 9

Okay. What is my # 9.. hang your britches on the line.

Oops. Haha. My inner child coming out.

Progress on my Farmers Wife quilt. I have not touched this since 19th July 2024. The concentration and time required to do these 6” blocks has not been with me with what I have been dealing with. At the moment things are in more of a routine. I have finished some quick finishes but it’s now time to make a little bit of a difference on this quilt. So here is where I am at now.

And here are some of the blocks

Now to work out where I’m up to.

Thanks for the push Deana

June 21 & 28th Farmers Wife blocks.

Chooky called a quick zoom session the other Sunday so I sat and tried to print my next blocks. The printer was playing up and wouldn’t pick up the paper. It nearly ended up in the bin. BUT I got my printer to work so while we were talking I printed out all of the remaining patterns. Tonight I have just finished sewing up the last blocks of June.

Block 52

Now to get started on the July blocks.

These are only 6” blocks. Some take hours to make and others only a north amount of time.

This quilt has 115 blocks in it so I’ll be working on it for a while.

June 7 & 14th Farmers Wife blocks.

It’s cold and wet outside. It’s the best guilt free weather to sit inside and sew.

So, I have been sewing all weekend. I had a few patterns printed out and I got them sewn. Went to print the next lot yesterday and had some trouble. So for the day I got blocks sewn.

Luckily there have been a few easier ones to catch up.

Thanks to Susan Gatewood for easy to print out paper foundation patterns. This has made it so much easier to sew the harder blocks.

Farmers Wife - still catching up.

I am still catching up with my Farmers Wife blocks. I have a few friends sewing along too. We were hoping to get 2 blocks done a week. Sometimes this happens and more times than not it doesn’t. I have a few more blocks to show. Thankfully some easy ones were done. Here are the blocks for May 24th.

Blocks 39 & 88

I use the easy 8 method and make 8 at a time 1/2 square triangles. I can then trim them to the perfect size with my bloc loc ruler.

Next up blocks 6 & 13 for May 31st

Slowly getting the blocks joined using the webbing method.

And here it is. Looking very pretty.

These are only 6” blocks and some have taken up to 5 hours to make 1 block.
Here is the next row ready to sew onto the quilt.

More Farmers Wife catch ups.

 May 17th blocks 65 & 57

I really liked this block. It went together very well and looks pretty with these fabrics.

It did take a little while to make.

I did this one a little different to the pattern. I removed some seams. If the next piece was the same fabric I cut them out as one piece.

The hardest part is choosing the fabrics.

More Farmers Wife blocks. Well one anyway.

Wow. This was a doozie. My mind just had trouble getting started.

Block 110

Sitting and sewing while listening to YouTube The Last Homely Quilter

Foundation paper piecing is tricky.

Once you get all the pieces stitched it’s time to join them together and getting the points to match.
So I pin on the seam points. I only push the pins in straight and don’t lay them flat.

Then I put dots of basting glue in the seam allowance

Start the seam stitching with the pins still staying straight up and only taking them out as you get to them.
Hopefully keeping the fabrics in the correct spot and points matching.

Some seams get ironed open and some to one side.
Then I use my wooden clapper to help flatten the seams better.

I don’t trim the outside of the block while I am piecing together as I am always having trouble getting them the right size. It is all pieced and ironed.

Papers removed and ironed again.

Now time to trim

And it has worked out beautifully. Yes, some points are off but I can live with it.

110 completed.

I’ve been sewing.

I have finally done some sewing. I haven’t looked at my Farmers Wife quilt blocks for over a month. Yesterday I actually opened the box, found some sashing fabric and started cutting.

I knew I didn’t want to make all the blocks first then join them all at the end. Off I went and started joining the one ps I already had up on my display wall.

I think it is looking great. Now I want to go and sew some more blocks. Just the push I needed.

Farmers Wife blocks in Echuca

I’ve been sewing along with some ladies making Farmers Wife blocks. I have never met them but just chatting online. We have been making 2 blocks a month but I fell behind due to holidays. Bronwyn invited us to stay at her house so we could meet and sew along together. Then I had a sewing day at my quilt group and made 3 blocks on the Saturday.

Sunday had me in the mood to sew all day and make 7 more. I caught up the weekend before heading to Echuca. This is where I was at.

We packed our caravan and headed off with my sewing machine and supplies. I was anxious about staying at someone’s house I had never met but the greeting went really well and Bronwyn, Peter, Tony and I chatted and laughed very easily. I did unpack my sewing and we got started with some sewing. Sorry, no photos.

The next morning we all went into town for a coffee, look around

and the quilt shop. SOUTH QUILTS.

I met Judi at the coffee shop. She came and did some sewing too. After lunch Shona arrived and set up her machine. So we all sat and sewed, talked, ate and then a drink. A great night was had. Next day we continued with some more sewing. As the day went on it was only Bronwyn and I left sewing.

Soon it was time to pack away the machine. We had a break and sat by the camp fire and had a few drinks.

Enjoyed a beautiful sunset.

then dinner and said our goodbyes as both Bronwyn and Peter were not going to be there when we got up and left. It was an amazing weekend

So, I have just unpacked everything after a couple of weeks. Here are the blocks I made for April 12

Block 87

& Block 56

Next for April 19’s blocks

No. 36

Block no. 46

April 26th - blocks. No. 1

Block no. 86…. Oops. I missed this one

May 3rd block. Did this one out of order but she is cute.

Block no. 29. Oh I must remember to cut my features on point …..

And all of them up on the wall. They will eventually have sashing between the blocks when I join them together. This is the order they are in the book but I will need to change some as the colour placements have to be spread around.

I think I am up to date… No to get started on some more. They are growing nicely.

Thank you Bronwyn and Peter for your hospitality and making Tony and I feel so welcomed.

Judi and Shona it was great meeting you.

Would love to do it again.

My Farmers Wife busy weekend

Due to all my holidays I had fallen behind in the Farmers Wife blocks I was supposed to have sewn.

I was 10 behind. I know they are only 6" blocks but they do take time.

Anyways, my quilt group had a sit n sew day yesterday and I knew what I needed to do. Friday I had to clean my sewing room, print out the patterns I needed and choose my fabrics. I achieved this and the car was packed for a great sewing day ahead.

Here they are.

Block 82 took me until lunch break to sew.

off for a little walk to get lunch and back again to the machine. Block 31 was quick

starting on Block 105

Block 91 called Strawberry Basket. I even had fabric that had strawberries on it.

I managed to get 4 blocks stitched and continued on Sunday to finish off the other 6 blocks.

Block 51

Block 102

Block 67

Block 79

Block 96

Block 21

Here they are all together. I choose colours without having my blocks up on the wall. Clearly, I will have to move some blocks around to mix up the reds and similar fabrics.

I am all caught up and ready for next weekend. I am going on a little sewing retreat to meet the other ladies I am sewing along with. 4 days together to get to know each other. There might be 4 or 5 of us. I am really not sure. We are taking the van and camping on one of the ladies house block. Yes, hubby is coming too and we are making a good weekend of it.
Hopefully we will get a few blocks made and share some tips.

I'll be thinking of all you Scrub Stitchin ladies who will be sewing along too at your retreat.
