Edited …. August is Aqua

August over at Angela’s is AQUA. I received my Bordertown B’s back from Judy. She has done an amazing job at quilting it for me.

(Close up photos to come)

Now it is time to get the binding done. Trimming up.

I think I have enough of the aqua backing to do it. Time to measure and get started.

Yes, there was enough. I needed 11.5 metres of binding.

It’s all sewn on and I have a few days of slow stitching to hand stitch it down then it will be a finish.

Of course there were leftovers so what did I do?

Make 2 more placemats.

This is now 39 out of 50 made.

Now to get back to my binding.

More purple play and placemats

I have been calculating amount of fabric required to make a quilt for a raffle. We have a certain amount of fabric so had to work out the best size we could get out of all the fabric.

We decided on working out a French braid with a piping strip. So off I went and had a play. Out came my purples.

Cut into 2.5” * 6.5” pieces. We need 7 strips of 50”. How many pieces do we need for each strip. Well, I am a visual person so I had a scrap piece of wadding about 60” long. Perfect. Sew, sew, sew. Quilt as you go technique.

Yes I counted correctly. We need 40 pieces per strip. I have drawn out a design and calculated fabric. Wonderful. We have enough for a quilt about 60” * 72”. Now to put this braid to good use.

Trim the strip. Guess a rough size for some placemats. I can get 3 out of this piece.

I had a scrap of this fabric that is perfect for the backing. 3 across the width uses it up.

Now I’m late to the party. I was at my friends and talking about putting bindings on fully by machine. I do this quite a lot on placemats and charity quilts. Just to save time. She was saying she uses her stitch in the ditch foot on her Janome. I didn’t even know my machine had one. Yes, it sure does. Foot G. What a game changer. This was a perfect spot to give it a go. This will be getting used more often now.

3 pretty placemats

All together. This makes 37 out of 50 completed….

Playing with purples

This month over at Angela’s is purple

https://superscrappy.blogspot.com/2025/07/scraphappy-saturday-now-in-purple.html

I saw this great tutorial on YouTube for a mini bucket bin.

I wanted to give it a go. So I decided to use up some purple scraps.

Here is one

It was so easy and fun to make I made a second one..

This should fit a round margarine or takeaway food container.
One will be a gift for a friends birthday. Now what should I put in it.

End of June….

 Where has the month gone.

This month’s colour was ORANGE for RSC and my challenge for June CHOOKSHED was to make placemats. This was an easy make so I don’t really know why I left it to the last weekend of the month. I suppose deadlines are good.

I have been so busy with a mystery and I couldn’t leave it go. I’ll start those posts soon. Then all this morning I was reading blogs. I haven’t really looked at them for over a week so say goodbye to a few hours.

Anyway for the orange. I pulled out my scraps

I’m even using scrap wadding. Yes, I overlap mine but I sew 3 rows of large zigzag stitch which helps flatten the thickness. These are only placemats and it works ok.

Sewing quilt as you go style and just sewing scraps.

Attaching the same binding on all of them.

Aren’t those zippers fun.

All 6 here ready to pass on to the group.

That’s now 34 out of 50 made

Thanks to Deana for helping us get some UFO’s out of the cupboard.

Have to wait and see what the number is for July.

Have a look over to Scrap Happy Saturday. RSC and see what others are doing

July is PURPLE

What happened in May

I don't know. Not much I suppose. I was missing in action. I found myself spending too much time reading blogs and watching Youtube. I was not getting anything else done apart from drs appointments. Ever since I got back from Scrub Stitchin' (post will still happen) my enthusiasm faded and I went down the technology rabbit hole. I did hide away and do some sewing which I will slowly post about during June.

It's a new month so I will do a post about my scrappy green mystery project (which I am still to complete) to link up with Scrap Happy Saturday.

During May I did work on a mystery with Conquering Mount Scrapmore.

CHAOS MYSTERY QUILT

All the weekly clues make up this 20" block

So 16 blocks make an 80' * 80" quilt

I didn't have a big enough piece of fabric for the backing. I don't normally piece my backings. I thought because it is a scrappy block and a large block why not make an extra large block for the backing. So I made an 80" block like the 20' block. My rectangles were 16" * 32", 16" squares and instead of making large flying geese I made 1/2 square triangles measuring 16".
Now to assemble the pieces into the backing the same way as I made the block for the front.

I failed and didn't do anything with May's challenge, my Flip La K bag.

Hopefully I will have better luck this month. I will be working on making some more placemats for charity.

Maybe I will do some in ORANGE. the colour for the month of June for RSC

A baby quilt on the way

Working with scraps. What can I make??

Well I do need a baby quilt for a close friend. They are expecting a new grand baby.

Into my scraps I go. I found a bag of leftover pieces from a previously made baby quilt. Some strips were already joined.

Cut some more pieces, join some more and then trim to the same size.

Add some sashings. I didn’t have enough for complete strips so I added cornerstones. Some even had to be pieced. The cornerstones were only 2” cut. I got there.

Start sewing together. I used the webbing method so I didn’t get the blocks mixed up or turned upside down.

I looked for a backing and wadding. I had a scrap piece of wadding the exact width I needed. I found this pretty green fabric. It too was the exact width but not length.

That’s okay. I added a strip of white across it.
I’ve had enough for today so I’ll get back to it soon. That was a lot of brain power.

A busy day… 5 crumb sewing placemats

I have had a fun day sewing up my scraps.. I am making up some placemats for meals on wheels at the end of the year. I hope to get 50 made so I can donate them for Xmas gifts to recipients.

I have already handed over 3 and have now made another 5. I’ll have to keep track of the count.

So I see blogger is putting the photos in a different order so this will take some time to post…

I’m working with my scraps. It’s time to tackle this basket.

I found these in amongst my go cutter dies. So thought I should use them up first.

Flying geese blocks already cut out but needed sewing.

I am using a new machine foot I bought 2 years ago. We always buy these gadget things but don’t use them enough. It is a quilting in the ditch foot. Oh wow. I was scared to try it but I will be using it in many more future projects. It was easy and gave an amazing finish.

And the quilting is finished

Next up was another pink scrap project. Look at the pile of scraps."

And it is done…

Next up is a bright coloured placemat.

And it has worked out so well.

Then there was a lot of purple.

It looks so good finished

And then there was blue. The colour for February

This looks good.

Here they are all together. They look great.

Here are the next 5 piles already sorted into their colours for my next sewing day.
Black/Grey, brown, red, green and yellow/orange.
